Energy Surcharge for Shipping

We add an Energy Surcharge to the freight rate to compensate for fluctuations in the price of the fuel (bunker) we use to power our ships and the price of CO₂ emissions linked to that fuel. The Energy Surcharge is composed of two elements : a Fuel Component and a CO₂ Component.   

Fuel Component  

The Fuel Component is based for 97.2% on the average Rotterdam Low Sulphur Marine Gas Oil (LSMGO) price in €/tonne* (98.6% for EU-UK voyages). The remaining 2.8% (1.4% for EU-UK voyages) is based on the price of UCOME 100% biodiesel in €/tonne. 

Emission Component 

EU:

The Emission Component for EU is based on the average CO₂ price (EEX EUA End of Day Index price in €/tonne)* x 98% (i.e a 2% discount reflecting the reduced carbon emissions resulting from the use of biofuel). The Emission Component is adjusted for routes to/from the UK (-50%). From January 2026 the EU ETS (and the Emission component of CLdN's Energy Surcharge) also includes methane and nitrous oxide - see attached Energy Surcharge tables for details. 

UK (as from July 2026):

For EU-UK sailings the UK ETS relates only to emissions in UK ports. On average, in port emissions represent 14% of CLdN’s total shipping emissions. On an EU-UK shipping line, this means that the UK emission component represents 7% of emissions on that route (relating to emissions in the UK port). For these emissions, the average CO2 price* is taken from the ICE UKA Futures (entitlement to emit one tonne of CO₂ expressed in £ and converted to €).

*the calculation period for all reference values is from the 16th of the month N-2 until 15th of the month N-1.  

The applicable components of the Energy Surcharge in July 2026 are:

UCOME 100% RED 2 biodiesel : EUR 1,741.70
